10.07.03 .... Long Weekend in the Mountains

We stayed one night in a "rustic" cabin at remote Trappers Lake in White River National Forest in northwest Colorado. Two nights in "modern" motels. Along the way we saw many interesting sights.

Sheep...

A beautiful valley on a LONG winding dirt road.

Trappers Lake. It has been a classic remote Colorado destination since the early 1900s. The land near the lake has been protected from development since the 1920s.

Most of the forest nearby was burned by a huge forest fire in 2002. I wish I'd come to see it in the 1990s - I just kept putting it off. In 20 years it should look green and gorgeous again.

This area was burned by an even larger fire in 1898.

The rustic cabin. The electricity goes off at 9:30PM. A propane heater can give heat if needed.

I caught a cutthroat trout on Sunday morning.

On the backroads between Trappers Lake and Hayden, the forest still looks beautiful and healthy but the mountain pine beetle is doing lots of damage in this area.

Breakfast at the Moose Cafe in Walden.

White Egret in a farm pond in Walden.

A gorgeous barn near Steamboat Springs.
